About the Programme
The CII Net Zero Programme is a multi-year engagement with the purpose of accelerating climate action within Indian industry and supporting the nation’s journey to its net-zero emissions target by 2070.
In a changing regulatory landscape — where industry emissions account for roughly 45% of India’s total emissions — the programme positions Indian businesses to anticipate and respond to evolving climate-related policies, disclosures, and global trade mechanisms.
Why it Matters
- Indian companies face mounting requirements, such as disclosures under Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), obligations around GHG accounting (Scopes 1 & 2), and emerging instruments like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for imported goods.
- For many firms, current participation in net-zero strategy is still nascent: among the top 500 listed companies in India, 83% reported Scope 1 & 2 emissions in 2023, but only 33% of those also reported Scope 3, and fewer than 25% have a formal net-zero goal.
- The programme helps industries build resilience, reduce risk from regulatory and market shifts, enhance sustainability credentials, and stay competitive in a green-transition world.
What the Programme Offers
The CII Net Zero Programme is structured into two major streams to comprehensively address corporate emissions:
Stream 1 – Mitigating Scope 1 & 2 Emissions
Focus: Direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions.
Key Steps:
- Sign-up/enrolment in the programme.
- Awareness & capacity-building sessions to enhance the organization’s understanding and skills in net-zero actions.
- Assessment of greenhouse-gas (GHG) inventorisation — quantifying current emissions.
- Developing growth scenarios and identifying emission-reduction levers and pathways.
- Support in crafting a detailed roadmap and action plan to achieve net-zero objectives.
- Formal commitment by the organization to its net-zero target, backed by the roadmap and strategy.
Stream 2 – Tackling Scope 3 Emissions
Focus: Indirect emissions across an organization’s value chain (Scope 3 — especially suppliers), which often form the largest share of a company’s total footprint.
Key Steps:
- Supply-chain analysis: mapping and assessing emissions hotspots in the value chain.
- Sensitization and awareness programmes for internal stakeholders and suppliers regarding supply-chain emissions.
- Capacity-building and guidance for suppliers.
- GHG inventory accounting and management for the suppliers.
- Access to web-based tools to monitor the supplier's emissions.
- Enhanced supplier disclosure and adoption of reduction strategies by suppliers.
Key Benefits of Participation
By joining the CII Net Zero Programme, companies gain:
- Tailored support and tools to systematically reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions.
- Structured approach to tracking and managing Scope 3 emissions — often the most challenging.
- Guidance from an experienced institution with a strong track record in sustainability services.
- Enhanced visibility of climate leadership, strengthening brand and stakeholder trust.
- The ability to embed climate-resilient business models, responsive to future regulations and market shifts.
Who Should Enroll
The programme is designed for Indian organisations who are:
- Committed (or looking to commit) to net-zero targets and want structured support in achieving them.
- Facing or anticipating regulatory disclosures and compliance pressures (e.g., BRSR, CBAM).
- Keen to engage their supply chains in emissions reduction and evolve toward sustainable value-chain models.
- Seeking to integrate climate strategy into their core business planning and operations.
